Making a Case to Keep the “Tush Push”
The formation is specifically designed to gain short yardage. Its just a glorified QB sneak. Nothing new. It’s situational. And not every team is equipped with the personnel to achieve it.
The near-perfect success rate the Eagles have is largely due to them having the right personnel: a great offensive line, a strong quarterback and a surrounding cast to help push the pile.
If a team isn’t succeeding at the play, either of two things are true: 1) the coaches and/or QB aren’t confident in putting their body on the line or 2) that team’s offense needs to hit the weight room. It is a demanding play that requires pure strength.
Banning the play simply because the Eagles are good at it is ridiculous. To be frank, every time it is mentioned that the play should be banned, it gives the Eagles even more credit for being able to execute a play down to perfection. If you don’t like it, be better.
