The annual fishing regulations are always updated with new rules regarding fish limits, seasons, designated fishing areas as well as the different zones in Ontario. Where I live in Southern Ontario is Zone 16. I always make sure I check the regs before I head out on the water!

It is imperative that if you are going to be an Ontario angler that you follow the rules that the Ministry of Natural Resources releases annually. This can either be attained in a physical copy, (book) or in an online PDF version. Make sure to always obey all regulations!

The new way of attaining an Ontario fishing licences involves going to the MNR website and filling out your information there. Payment method involves credit card, and licences are shipped to your home in the mail. Make sure you get your if you haven't applied yet!

ATTENTION ONTARIO ANGLERS! The Ministry of Natural Resources has recently gone to a new way of attaining your Ontario fishing license. They have gone to an all online approach rather than the traditional way of picking it up at your local tackle shop!

Salmon trolling lures include spoons, body baits and cut bait. These are all trolled behind your boat wile you typically drive between 2-4 mph. The bites are huge and the fish are aggressive in the lake after returning from spawning in the river! Get out there and go after them!

Ever wanted to do some fishing from a boat? Your in luck! The Great Lakes this time of year has an amazing Salmon fishery. These fish are primarily targeted by trolling, which is a technique that involves dragging your lure with the speed of your boat while you drive it!

Channel Catfish rely heavy on their amazing sense of smell when looking for food. The answer is STINKY BAITS! The best baits to use for these guys include shrimp, pieces of fish, chicken liver and canned sardines. Fish on bottom and expect to tangle with one of these kitty's!

It's Spring time and you know what that means… Catfish! Channel Catfish which migrate up the rivers to spawn in the Spring are some of the biggest and hardest fighting fish you can find this time of year! They can be found this time of year at almost any Great Lakes river mouth.

Freshwater Drum are most often targeted with live bait. Dew Worms being probably the most popular. However minnows and maggots work great for them too! Fish these baits on bottom and be patient, you can expect to hook into one of these horses!!!

Freshwater Drum much like Carp are another forgotten species. People underestimate the amazing fight they give and how plentiful they are! April is when you can expect to see them running up the tributaries of the Great Lakes!

Between the two spinner baits, the white one on the left would be the one I would throw in dirtier water, it will be more visible to the fish. The one on the right which to me looks like a natural perch imitation is for clear water and high sun!

For a fishing starter kit, I recommend starting off with an all purpose rod and reel combo. A good assortment of hooks and sinkers, along with some floats. Most people start off with this setup and fish live bait. This is a setup that will catch everything that swims!
