No PMI is the ideal scenario but not realistic for most first-time homebuyers. Scrape together at least 5% and buy whatever you can afford.. Fixed-rate mortgage of course. The important think is to get into the market and ride the wave up. Build equity in that first house so that when you sell, you’ll have 20% to put down on a bigger/better house. House are like jobs these days, most people don’t stay in them forever.
