Let's finally fix crime, roads, and other basic local government failures plaguing our amazing city for decades. Demand better, prioritize differently. ⚜️
Act 54 closes a loophole where criminals may be prematurely released on bail before the State has exhausted its rights to appeal when a claim for post-conviction relief is granted by a district court without a stay. This change ensures that a convicted individual remains in jail until the appellate process is complete.
Thank you, Rep. @tbacala2, for carrying this important piece of legislation! #lalege

“Impose its will on the city…” What’s almost always missing from this kind of analysis is just how broken New Orleans government has been. Effectively screaming for state-level involvement. Eventually people grow tired of severe dysfunction. #lalege#lagov
Gov. Jeff Landry has issued his first veto from the regular session, nixing a bill by Lafayette Sen. Gerald Boudreaux that would have increased the cap on compensation somone can receive from the state for being wrongfully convicted. SB125: https://t.co/X5mHnYvVxs #lalege
@BayouMamaBears Cameron Henry is a big part of the problem with a lot of these issues. Who stacked Judiciary A with plaintiff lawyers? Cameron Henry did. He abdicated responsibility here to let cronyism happen. What should happen is Cameron Henry should lose the Senate Presidency.
Governor Landry hasn’t created any quagmire. A bill was passed to eliminate 3 judgeships in criminal court - legislation that the Supreme Court data supports and is long overdue.
It’s unfortunate that Senate President Cameron Henry allowed Senator Gary Carter to select which judges to eliminate, instead of using the fair method of “last in, first out”. Senator Carter chose to spare his cousin Judge Leon Roche and randomly cut Judge Rhonda Goode-Douglas.
All that means is, Judge Goode-Douglas will now run for a seat with a different letter than her original seat. She will still run as an incumbent. No one in the public knows which judge is which letter. She should run against Leon Roche, and she will likely win.
The right sizing of the court doesn’t get scrapped because Senator Carter screwed over Judge Goode-Douglas. New Orleans voters can take that up when Roche and Carter are on the ballot again.
@JeffLandry@AGLizMurrill Glad to see this, Governor. But we *must* make DA and judicial accountability top priority. No matter what laws are in place, some local DAs and judges are constant getaway cars. Undermining the criminal legal system.
In the very next story after Sen. Duplessis complained that #lalege is attacking New Orleans uncontrollably with "no rhyme or reason," we see city-managed playgrounds are *still* in awful shape, too dangerous for kids, littered with drug needles and trash. Just doesn't get it.
As I stated from the beginning, the Legislature had the constitutional authority to consolidate these offices, and Act 15 clearly transferred all duties and responsibilities to Orleans Parish Clerk of Court Chelsey Richard Napoleon. The Louisiana Supreme Court got this right. #lalege

@Smurficus_@_MikaLyrics@crawlwithBRIAN@d_villio@CityOfNOLA New Orleans spent hundreds of millions of dollars in a recent 5 year period. And we still end up with this ⬆️. It’s not working. People are tired of it and are looking for a different path. Including additional options prior to penalties in this bill. https://t.co/znO2p0NEca
"We are in no way 'criminalizing homelessness.' We are saying you simply can't sleep where you want to sleep in public... If you're not going to sleep in a shelter, then you can only camp in a designated place." 👏 @d_villio. Every @CityOfNOLA leader should be for this. #lalege
@homeless_law The way New Orleans leaders have been handling homeless is not working. Must also have mechanisms to quickly and reliably enforce quality-of-life standards. Which they are reluctant to do. This is in our tourist-heavy French Quarter. Totally unacceptable. https://t.co/1W7mXuDpLB
#lalege#justiceforJake Please contact your Rep. My brother would be alive today if it weren’t for an incompetent judge. 493 missed required electronic monitoring check-ins. No accountability. My family is pleading for you to put politics aside and put yourself in our shoes.
