@BeatTheCult IMO, those who do it well and benefit from it are effectively maintaining a relationship with their inner, idealized, highest self.
It's often commented that "god always seems agree with the believer."
If their ideals are good, such a "relationship" can help one live them.

He didn’t take any of the expected routes for a man with trauma but instead focused himself on “fixing” my moms.
