A presidential escort vehicle was on Sunday involved in a fatal crash in Embu County, with reports indicating that it struck and killed a boda boda rider and his female passenger instantly before plunging into a nearby river, where the occupants of the vehicle are said to be trapped.

In my honest opinion, there is absolutely no issue with having a prayer room within State House for the personal devotion of the Head of State. If the President is a Christian, it can be a chapel, if he is Muslim, a musalla or whatever space aligns with his faith.

State House has numerous rooms and auxiliary buildings. Dedicating one of them for spiritual reflection is entirely reasonable. Any modest funds required to equip or maintain that room can rightly come from the government, as State House is a public institution.

However, constructing a mega church within State House, then justifying it by saying it’s funded with personal money not only defies the spirit of our constitutional order, but also raises serious questions of accountability and propriety.

To put this into perspective, can I as Pauline, decide to take a portion of Githiga High School to build a church using my own money, even without any consultation with the public or consideration for the community? Of course not. That would be a blatant violation of public trust. The principle remains the same, no matter one’s title or position.

A chapel already exists within State House. If an upgrade or renovation is needed, the proper procedure should be followed. beginning with a justification submitted to the Treasury, and proceeding through parliamentary approval, just like any other government expenditure. What should not happen is someone simply waking up and deciding to use personal money to construct a building on public land. That bypasses established processes and undermines public accountability.
