I've had the chance to interview the former Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo many times (recently with @rSanti97!) and he framed Direct File as a (1) way for Americans to not have to pay for filing their taxes (like most other countries) and (2) a way to show people the government can work for them.
