If possible, please resolve my problem understanding Newton’s Bucket and its consequences
for modern theoretical physics.
NB was a problem for Newton. In the Principia he noted that application of his second law of
motion reified to centrifugal force correctly predicted the surface vortex formation for a lab
observer, but not for a bucketeer …..one attached to the bucket.
Newton proposed invoking an abstraction of an absolute space, wherein the laws of
physics(dynamics) would be effective. But he never identified in real space where this absolute
ref frame was situated and thus allow for mandated methodical testing.
Mach & Berkeley said that the cause of water motion was its moving relative to the Earth and
distant stars.
An internet solution states that only the Earth/lab frame applies in dynamics, resolving the NB
paradox. .

The NB question was submitted to Bribot.

What’s the explanation of Newton's Bucket?

Absolute space is a math abstraction. But measurement of motion is done in real physical
space.

The Earth/lab/ECEF ref frame is inertial; the bucket RF is non-inertial. The rotating bucket could
be anywhere in the universe and the centrifugal force would still be computed as zero…and still
wrong.
So…the Earth seems to be the only universal inertial frame [ …a ref frame in which the laws of
dynamics are valid.]

A follow-up question.. How can Newton’s absolute space be tested?

Absolutism and relativity are logical contraries. Relativity is a mathematical truism which applies
in kinematics, thus excluding absolutism in relativity.
However, NB is a dynamics issue, an instance of the failure of physical laws of motion, not
kinematics, the measurement domain of relativity. Measurement of the water motion agrees in
both Lab and Bucket Ref Frames.
Dynamic projection of future motion is invalid in the bucket RF; valid in the Lab frame.
Tests of ref frames orbiting Earth or in linear motion wrt Earth generalize the NBX result to
universal law so as to apply to all motions in the cosmos.
This establishes absolutism (of the Earth observer’s predictions) over any other observer’s ref
frame.

How has Newton's concept of absolute space been largely superseded by Einstein's theory of
relativity?

RB: #2 …SR postulate 1 is contradicted by plentiful counter-tests , including the NB, the hiker
and accelerating car, free fall and downhill biker examples. Again, the Earth is the privileged ref
frame in the universe, the only frame in which the laws of physis are valid.
