A few months ago, we cared for the newborn of a 16-year-old girl. The baby was born with a condition called colonic atresia. This is where the bowel has a blind ending loop, which forms an obstruction. The baby is unable to tolerate breastmilk and vomits with increasing frequency. If this is not diagnosed in the first couple of days of life,the baby's abdomen begins to swell, and they can become severely dehydrated. Surgical intervention is the only way to save the baby's life. This baby came to us after one week and was quite unwell. Caring for ill babies presents a unique set of challenges in itself. However, when the mother is a child herself, it presents a new set of hurdles. Although barely out of childhood, she now has to make medical decisions for her child and cope with being a mother in an environment where there is no social support. The surgical team often has to take on diverse roles such as those of a lactation nurse; teaching a teen mum how to breastfeed. It's heartbreaking looking into the eyes of a child who has a child.

Tanzania 🇹🇿 gets new electric trains for its upgraded SGR network.

The country enters a new era of high-speed rail as the service from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro begins on Friday, slashing travel time from 4 hours to 1 hour and 40 minutes.

The new trains shown in the photo will also serve the Dar es Salaam to Dodoma route starting July 25.
