I’ve just finished reading a fascinating 2017 article by Or Honig and Ariel Reichard that exposes the full repertoire of techniques used to fabricate atrocity images, deploy human shields, manipulate and distort casualty figures, and reinterpret combat scenes as massacres—tactics characteristic of Hamas and its supporters, from “human-rights organizations” to local and international commentators, the Omer Bartovs of this world.

The article, written in 2017, naturally does not address the current war, but it extensively discusses Hamas during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, as well as numerous other actors who manufactured atrocity imagery. In many of these cases, genuine war crimes had indeed occurred and civilians were deliberately killed, which made it easier for propagandists to invent far worse horrors—taking a kernel of truth and surrounding it with layers of distortion.

Among the examples: a rare BBC investigation showing that most of the atrocity images circulated by Hamas in 2014 were actually taken from other conflicts; massive inflation of civilian casualty figures by Bosnians, Albanians, and Arafat in 1982; the Jenin “massacre” that never happened; multiple forgeries from the anti-Qaddafi uprising in Libya (on both sides); the fabricated tale about Iraqi soldiers killing Kuwaiti babies during the Gulf War; and many, many more.

Honig and Reichard’s pessimistic conclusion—which aligns closely with the findings in Chapters 6–8 of our own study of the current Gaza War—is that neither human-rights organizations nor the media possess the will or the methodological tools to debunk such falsifications, due in part to a phenomenon similar to what we have termed “the humanitarian bias.” In their view, fabrications of this kind—coupled with a deliberate human-shield strategy designed to maximize casualties on one’s own side—have become an extraordinarily effective tool for weak or non-state actors confronting much stronger state adversaries, especially when the non-state actor initiated the conflict and begins with an inherent “propaganda deficit.”

And it worked. As we are seeing now with the blood libel of the so-called “genocide” in Gaza, it continues to work even today.
