The Servitors
It is said that the Kindlers have dedicated servants that labour in the most difficult of conditions. These servants must undergo special training, for they are exceptionally lean, extremely strong, and very persistent. They are often bundled up in rags or cloaks.
The Shellguard
Rarely seen outside the inner sanctums of the Kindlers, the guild's elite guards are huge, towering over the citizens, clad in carapace-like armour, their faces hidden with helms. Are they rats aided by Kindler technology? Or are they something else entirely?
The Great Library
Deep inside the headquarters of the Guild of Candlemakers is their Great Library. It is rumoured to contain treatises on long-forgotten arts, sciences, technologies, and other wonders from before the Fall. The Kindlers guard the library jealously.
The Starlings
The Kindlers are constantly creating new devices and mechanisms, all powered by Ember. It is said that these devices come from research done by a group called the Starlings, but it's not clear who they are, or where they come from.
Jack of Tails
In Lanternside, the Yards, and the Court, they whisper about the exploits of a criminal nuisance, or a champion of poor rats everywhere - depending on your point of view. Jack of Tails is a legendary trickster, poking fun at the rich and the pompous.
Demons
It is rumoured that some spirits are malevolent, and can actively possess others. These rumours are strongly denied as heretical by the Dominion.
Spirits
The City of Flotsam is no stranger to hauntings. Ghosts, wraiths, call them what you will - clouds of golden, glowing dust that appear to move at their own will. Some drift, formless; others have been seen to coalesce into ratlike figures, or, sometimes, other shapes.
The Dreamweavers
There are some who say that a true history of the world can be divined by piecing together the memories of the Foundlings. They talk of a time of war, where the earth was torn to pieces. The Dominion deal harshly with anyone who promotes this heretical nonsense.
Kraken
The surface of the ocean shows nothing save the occasional ripple, until an Ember-fuelled motor disturbs the calm. Then, violence, and the shards of the vessel are simply more floating debris to be caught in the nets. Was that dorsal fin, a proboscis, a flash of scales?
Smite's Place
Smite runs a rag-and-bone warehouse at the back of one of the lanes in the Yards. There she sorts through piles of clutter and old clothing, often from the Takers, and mends items for sale, or sells the materials to tailors, jewellers, and other craftsrats.
The Drop of Dew
A small tavern in the Yards, the Drop of Dew is down-at-heel but cosy. The patrons are kept in line by Sunny, the owner; her disapproval is legendary. Sunny has been known to take in Foundlings who have nowhere else to go - at least until they find their feet.
The Tappers
A smuggling gang who operate across the Yards and Lanternside, the Tappers are known for supplying good quality tamper at cut rates compared to the Taverners, and also providing a line of exotic tamper laced with interesting and unusual herbs.
The Jubilee Theatre
The Jubilee Theatre lies in the heart of Lanternside, on the Hanger near the water's edge. There, a rat can enjoy the latest music hall entertainments, such as Ermintrude the Great Illusionist, Annanosto the Magnificent Mage, and the Dixie Doolan Four.
The Wasters
The inhabitants of the Bridge of Nails disdain all forms of Ember-powered mechanism, claiming that such things are blasphemy. But since they live in Ruin and spend their time imbibing strange substances, this has little impact on the people of Flotsam.
The Iskander
Once a giant metal sea-going vessel, now a rusting hulk trapped amongst icebergs somewhere in the stillness of the ocean surrounding Flotsam. It is not clear where the ship came from, but it was built for a crew far bigger than rats.
