On this night in 1781, one man on a horse saved the American Revolution from losing Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and half of Virginia's government in a single morning.
You were never taught his name.
June 3, 1781. The British had chased Virginia's entire government out of Richmond. Jefferson, in his final days as governor, and the legislature had fled to Charlottesville, thinking they were safe in the foothills.
They were wrong.
That evening, 26 year old militia captain Jack Jouett was at a tavern in Louisa County when roughly 250 of the most feared cavalry in the British army came pounding down the road. Their commander: Banastre Tarleton, nicknamed "The Butcher," the man whose dragoons had cut down surrendering Americans at Waxhaws.
There was only one place they could be going. Charlottesville. 40 miles away. And the capture of Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, would be the prize of the war.
Jouett couldn't outrun them on the main road. So he didn't use it.
He swung onto overgrown backwoods trails and the abandoned Old Mountain Road, riding 40 miles through the dark with only the full moon for light. Legend says low hanging branches whipped and scarred his face for life.
Tarleton stopped his men for a 3 hour rest. Jouett never stopped.
Before sunrise on June 4, he came up the mountain to Monticello and woke Jefferson. Then he rode down into Charlottesville and warned the legislature.
Jefferson got out with minutes to spare. British dragoons were coming up his mountain as he left. The legislature escaped over the Blue Ridge to Staunton. Tarleton caught only seven stragglers, one of them a frontiersman serving in the legislature named Daniel Boone.
Paul Revere rode about 12 miles in 1775 and got captured before reaching Concord. Longfellow wrote him a poem and made him immortal.
Jack Jouett rode 40 miles, lost nothing, saved everything, and got a thank you gift of two pistols and a sword from the Virginia Assembly.
No poem. No fame. Almost no memory.
Made 2 versions of a monstera leaf I designed. My favorite was the second but those beads were a bit more challenging to use. I played around with transparent beads in the negative space and will probably make one without to compare.
Cat parents will hear a very specific “mrrrp” and instantly translate it into full instructions like “Oh, okay, you want the heating pad on, understood.”
Dear (native) British people, I enjoyed watching you throw garbage cans at your corrupt police force.
I’d like to watch it again tonight.
Thank you,
America
Did anyone hold Henry's hand, tell him they were there with him. That it would be Okay, that God loves him? Did they pray with him? Comfort him? Did they protect him from his attackers slander or from threat of more abuse as he died? No, they fucking did not. They instead laughed as he died, mocked Henry and made jokes with and comforted and assured his murderer.
Henry died in the most Inhumane and undignified way possible. He was beaten, stabbed, kidnapped, dragged across the gravel and humiliated, mocked and berated as a "racist" as he died. Being shot and kicked into a ditch by a death squad would have been more dignified and humane than what Henry Nowak got from his own government. So I'm not interested in the excuses of the British government. Fuck you. Fuck your entire system. Fuck an entire system that would arrive on scene and decide that because Henry Nowak was a white man and a "racist" that it was okay to sit there and laugh as he bled out and died. He was a child. He was an Innocent man. He died surrounded on all sides by attackers, accusers and those who mocked him and laughed at him as he bled out.
JURY UPDATE: Apparently there were no black jurors chosen for the trial of Karmelo Anthony.
And Dominique Alexander, who has acted as a spokesperson for the family, is already framing this as Karmelo Anthony “not receiving a fair trial”.
Dominique, is the same activist who previously stated that criticism of Anthony, after he fatally stabbed Metcalf, was rooted in “white supremacy” and “racism”.
As a refresher, he also has an incredibly long criminal past (including leading a protest in 2016 that ended with 5 police officers dead).
He has previously been convicted of:
-Felony injury after shaking a 2 year old child so violently that the child’s eyes and brain bled (he only spent 8 days in jail for this)
-Felony theft
-Stealing a car
-Forging a check
-Making a false police report
-Evading arrest
He is now using his platform to write the narrative that Karmelo is not receiving a fair trial and has utilized this entire trial to stoke racial tensions.
