New CDC study: 75% of US adults support wastewater monitoring, and 95% say they would take steps to protect themselves if wastewater data showed disease spread was high.

We need to fund wastewater monitoring and include the data in daily weather reports, so everyone is aware.

Analysis of the #H5N1 sequence from the presumed H2H transmission in Missouri finds two concerning mutations:

1. Likely reduces effectiveness of antibodies derived from the current H5N1 vaccine.

2. May moderately increase infective in humans.

Interestingly the recently uploaded sequence from the human #H5N1 case (MO) shares HA mutations with another sequence from Dairy Cow Milk [HA: P152S and A172T]

Meta data indicates this sequence is from individual cow milk (collection date 04/08/2024).

🚨📣 Anticipated sequence from human #H5N1 case in Missouri w/ lack of clear exposure source, just released by @CDCFlu through @GISAID [EPI_ISL_19413343]. Clade 2.3.4.4b, similar to dairy cattle H5N1 virus. Sample collected 8/22/24, sequence took over 3 weeks to release!

Source of infection investigation ongoing, but very interesting to see HA sequence relation to Texas dairy cow in April.

The NEJM paper on sequencing wastewater for #H5N1 is particularly important because it allows us to understand when the virus is adapting toward human-human transmission. It seems that multiple mutations would be necessary for this scenario to occur, but knowing when it is happening could trigger escalation of the response.

"Of importance, a glutamic acid, instead of lysine, in position 627 of PB2 suggests that this virus has not extensively adapted to humans (see Table S2, which shows all unique single-nucleotide polymorphisms)."
