Maria Childers, born Mark Childers, is a biological male who worked at Explore Learning Academy in Paducah, Kentucky. In November 2022 a coworker reported watching Childers change an infant girl's diaper.

The witness said Childers rubbed the baby's genital area in a "circular motion" while the infant appeared in distress. Childers then said, "That was her cl*t area, and she likes it. It just made her day."

McCracken County charged first-degree s*xual abuse of a victim under 12 and three counts of first-degree criminal abuse.

Those felonies carry five to ten years each.

On Jan. 26, 2024, Childers pleaded guilty to Class A s*xual misconduct, a misdemeanor. The felonies were dropped. Judge Joseph Roark imposed 12 months with credit for more than 300 days already served, then a six-month conditional discharge.

Commonwealth's Attorney Dan Boaz said there were "contradictions" and that the deal matched "what could be proven in court." Roark said he paused the plea until prosecutors assured him they could not prove the original charges.

Curtis Jenkins, 24, is charged with preliminary m*rder in Indianapolis in the de*th of his daughter, Jaymalyn Cox. He pleaded not guilty. A jury trial was set for October.

Jaymalyn was three months old. Her grandmother recorded her before the handoff so there would be proof she left healthy. This was the first time Jenkins was alone with her. Her mother, Jayla Cox, had been afraid to leave her because of prior DCS cases on his other children.

Apartment audio from July 18 captured him mocking the cries. Police say he told her, "Yeah, I'm t*rturing you," and "You heard your big sister, she says shut up." He also said, "You keep crying. I don't want to deal with you."

Investigators wrote that he screamed "Shut up" and later "shut the f*** up." The affidavit describes loud thuds, smacking sounds, a car seat hitting the floor, and about a minute of cries of pain.

Then his voice changed: "Oh, s***. You good? Oh, s***."

She wasn't. Not at all.

He called 911 at 12:26 p.m. and said she got too hot because the car had no AC. Riley Hospital doctors found three brain bleeds, broken ribs, retinal hemorrhaging, and "too many hemorrhages to count" in her spine. Those injuries did not match heat. She was pronounced d*ed on July 21.

Jenkins told detectives he "did not know what happened to her." He said if he found who put hands on his baby, he would m*rder them. IMPD booked him in the Marion County Jail. Jayla Cox said the family wants justice for Jaymalyn.
