If we don't do something to secure the integrity of our elections, we could soon lose our constitutional republic.

There are actions the federal government can take to incentivize states like California to clean up their election processes.

Go back to 1974 with me for a moment. President Nixon signed a bill into law called the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act. It essentially placed pressure on the states to behave the way that the federal government wanted them to behave in a situation where the federal government didn't have a direct authority to dictate something to the states.

States were essentially required to set the speed limit on their highways at 55 miles an hour.

If a state didn't do this, then it did not receive federal highway funds. States across the country complied because they wanted that money from the federal government.

Ten years later in 1984, President Reagan signed into law a bill called the National Minimum Drinking Age Act. It authorized the secretary of transportation to withhold a portion of the annual federal highway funding allotted to individual states if the state did not comply with making the drinking age 21 years old. States could not afford to lose that funding, so eventually, all 50 states raised the legal drinking age to 21 years old.

Those are two examples of negative reinforcement from the federal government.

There's also a precedent of positive reinforcement regarding children's car seats and booster seats.

There was a law that was passed in 2005 that told states, if you align your car seat and booster seat laws to the federal government's recommendations, then you receive additional funding.

Why doesn't President Trump do this?

Why doesn't the United States Congress—controlled by Republicans in the House and the Senate—withhold funding from California until election integrity measures have been put in place?

The federal government has multiple options and actions it can take to ensure the integrity of California elections. We, as United States citizens, have no obligation to trust an election that isn't guaranteed to be free and fair by the administrators who are running that election.
