If a prophet or pastor had made a video saying that any Muslim who declares that Jesus Christ is not the Son of God should be beaten to death or lynched, I strongly believe the Ghana Police Service would have acted swiftly to investigate and arrest the individual.

We have seen the police take action against religious figures before, including the arrest and detention of Prophet Isaac Owusu-Bempah during the tenure of IGP Akuffo Dampare

So why should the standard be different when the allegation involves a Muslim cleric?

If an Imam has genuinely called on Muslims to kill anyone who speaks against Prophet Muhammad, then the matter must be investigated immediately, and if the evidence supports the allegation, the appropriate legal action must follow.

This is not about Christianity versus Islam. It is about the rule of law, public safety and equal treatment under the law.

Nobody is above the laws of Ghana. Religious leaders are not above the law, and no religious belief should be used as a shield for incitement to violence.

I call on the Ghana Police Service to apply the law fairly, consistently and without fear or favour.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to bring to the attention of the United States Embassy in Ghana @USEmbassyGhana a serious security and rule-of-law concern currently unfolding in Ghana.

A video currently in the public domain clearly captures a Muslim cleric calling on Muslims to kill anyone who dares to speak against the Prophet Muhammad. The video is publicly available and can be provided for your attention and verification.

My concern is not about Islam or Muslims. Ghana is a religiously diverse country, and every citizen has the right to practise his or her religion. My concern is the apparent call for violence against people because of their speech or views, and the failure of the relevant Ghanaian security authorities to take what I consider to be prompt action despite the video being publicly accessible.

I am therefore concerned about the implications this development may have for public safety, freedom of expression, religious tolerance and the rule of law.

I respectfully urge the Embassy to take note of this development and, within the limits of its diplomatic mandate, encourage the appropriate Ghanaian authorities to investigate the matter promptly, impartially and transparently.

If Ghana is committed to the principles of democracy, freedom of expression and equal protection under the law, then those principles must apply regardless of the religious identity, position or influence of the individual involved.

I am prepared to provide the publicly available video and any additional information in my possession to the appropriate authorities.
