I can’t imagine what value Russian Tanks on Kyiv streets buys Putin, let alone smoking holes and blown out buildings or deal Ukrainians for that matter
@MacroAlf I wish I were a bit smarter historically on same…Adam Tooze and Richard Evans two great authors in this space that may shed light on the enduring nature of the challenge
@MacroAlf I think you see it in the NATO Alliance politics as well. The Joint Force Command Structure reinforces it. The Migrant Crisis demonstrated it in spades. The current crisis in UKR teases at it even more so.
@MacroAlf Most in the US would not understand this dynamic. I think you have live there to understand it. Even within in Italy itself…the “difference” between Milan and Naples could not be more striking.
@LukeGromen A good thread.
I don’t see an off ramp, nor a valid deterrent (at-least one that will resonate in the eyes of the 60% approving Russian)
This is pure honor and interest.
@LukeGromen 60% approval in Russian polls is spot on. Average Russian eats this stuff up. P slices away at NATO, European Security, and US credibility bit by bit. Russian Security guaranteed for next 50 years.
This incredible interview & numerous others were published in @EdwardGLuce's excellent 2011 book
"Time to Start Thinking: America in the Age of Descent."
IMO it's must-read. It's a shame Wash DC didn't heed its thoughtful advice & prescient warnings.
