The best designs in my opinion start with a very solid concept, and the most solid concept for each person will usually be something that is vaguely related to them, their hobbies or their nationality. This is not at all required but if you are trying to min max it tends to work very well. For example an artist vtuber that has a painter theme, a doctor vtuber who is an actual doctor irl, or in my case, I became a vampire vtuber because I'm from romania. This can be pretty hard to find though so I'd say don't worry abt this too much if you don't have something like this to incorporate into the design.

That aside, let's talk about strong concepts. My genuine advice for this is to just pick a niche animal. This is THE easiest way to fully stand out and be able to explore even multiple themes at once without worrying too much about the previous paragraph. Id say the best ones to go for are animals that are either under represented or can have a play of words in their name. For example a ghost shark is a thing, so you could be a literal ghost ghost shark. Other examples I can think of are VAMPIRE squid, CLOWN fish, emperor angelfish, harpy eagle, etc.

Now if you DON'T want to be an animal or have a concept that relates to real hobbies or identity, there is still overall advice I can give in terms of design that can apply to any concept from the most insane unique ones to the classic catgirl. Concept is the first thing to worry about and is what we discussed earlier, once you have that down, you should start thinking about style, as in what type of clothes will your character wear, and what vibe will it convey in combination with the concept. Here is my advice for outfit design:

1. Intentionality in design. When adding an element, think about why is it there, what does it say about this character, what functionality does it have and how does it lead the viewer to think about the concept. In my design, the reoccurring motifs are the blood drop shape which is not only part of the outfit print but the crop of the bodysuit windows, as well as the bats present all around.

2. Simple, but not TOOOO simple. You want to be effective but you also don't want to be plain. An empty black hoodie is simple but tells us nothing about the character, so try to tie all outfit elements back to your concept

3. Cohesiveness. Sometimes you have to sacrifice elements to end up with a cohesive vibe. For example, if you are doing a nightwear soft vibe chill outfit, adding elements such as cyberpunk style pants with lots of belts and buckles will clash with your existing theme. (pro character designers can definitelly get away with marrying 2 clashing themes, but that's aproached completely differently from the start: eg; instead of making a nightwear top and cyberpunk bottoms you'd make a cyberpunk-nightwear top)

4. Understanding that vtuber design is not the same as traditional character design. A vtuber model will be seen from the bust up for 90% of the time so they tend to be more top heavy compared to the average character design for animation. Vtuber models also tend to be more mascoty in their design. In an anime, a shark girl doesnt need to wear a hoodie with a shark print to show she is a shark, because the narrative will tell us that. As a vtuber, you tend to want the design to instantly tell people what you are about

5. Forgetting the laws of physics. Unironically, don't think about if this outfit would work if it was real, or if real people wear this type of stuff or if gravity allows a certain hairstyle to exist the way it does. Look at pekora, her dress is almost defying gravity and she has carrots perfectly stuck in her hair at all times
