This was the most interesting part of Carney's appearance this morning.
Asked what changes the Americans made that were unacceptable, he gave a clear and direct answer with concrete examples.
This was not a deal any PM should have signed with those auto tariffs on trucks.
The ongoing almajirinisation of relationships has made marriage undesirable to many young men. Commodifying genuine desires has caused so many true companionships to fail.
We have taken something meant to be a covenant and turned it into a marketplace. A man no longer approaches a woman as a potential partner, companion, and co-builder of a home. He approaches as a sponsor, an ATM, a project funder. The language has changed. “What do you do?” is no longer about character or vision. It is an audit. “Can you take care of me?” is not a question of mutual responsibility. It is a demand for lifestyle upgrade.
This is the Almajiri model applied to intimacy. The boy is sent out to roam, to beg, to bring something back, to prove his usefulness daily or risk being discarded. Dignity is secondary. The relationship is not a home. It is a collection point.
Genuine desires to be chosen, respected, desired, to have someone who stands with you when the money is tight, who builds with you instead of waiting to be maintained, have been priced and packaged. Soft life. Runs. “If he wanted to, he would.” The man who cannot immediately deliver the Instagram version of provision is treated as incomplete. The man who can is treated as a resource to be extracted until a better one appears.
The result is predictable. Many men look at marriage and see a high-risk, low-reward contract. They see years of financial outlay, social performance, and emotional labour with no guarantee of loyalty, peace, or even basic companionship. They see the stories: the wife who becomes distant once the house is built, the woman who files for divorce the moment the income dips, the children used as leverage. They see family lawyers’ waiting rooms filling up with men who thought they were building a family and discovered they were funding an exit strategy.
This is not an attack on women. It is an observation of a cultural shift that has harmed both sexes. When a woman’s primary value in the marketplace is her ability to extract, she loses the very thing that makes companionship possible; the ability to be known, to be trusted, to be a partner rather than a beneficiary. When a man’s primary function is provision without reciprocity, he stops seeing marriage as a blessing and starts seeing it as a liability.
Traditional and religious frameworks understood this. Marriage was complementary, not transactional. The man provided, the woman nurtured, both were expected to show honour, restraint, and loyalty. There were rights and duties on both sides. Today we have kept the duties on one side and expanded the entitlements on the other. Then we wonder why young men delay, why they choose situationships, why they speak of “peace” as something they can only find outside the institution.
Commodification kills the thing it claims to sell. You cannot buy companionship. You can only buy compliance for a season. Real partnership requires character that cannot be photographed, loyalty that does not fluctuate with account balance, and a shared understanding that the home is more important than the lifestyle.
The men withdrawing are not all bitter or broke. Some are simply tired of auditioning. They have watched enough marriages collapse under the weight of unmet material expectations. They have seen enough women who confuse being provided for with being loved. They have concluded that the current version of the institution is not worth the risk.
If we want marriage to become desirable again, we must stop treating it as a commercial upgrade and return it to what it was meant to be: two people choosing each other for who they are, not for what they can currently afford. Until then, the Almajiri model will continue to produce more men who would rather stay outside the system than enter it as beggars in their own homes.
