Over the past few months, I’ve been creating content around @ConcreteXYZ.

What started with articles and submissions gradually turned into sketches, websites, data dashboards, community resources, interactive experiences, research series, and even something I literally built with my hands.

So I decided to put everything in one place.

Here’s a look at what I’ve created for Concrete and how the work evolved along the way.

It started with writing.

Articles research and submissions were my first way of understanding Concrete deeply enough to explain it to someone else.

I wasn’t interested in simply repeating product talking points. I wanted to find different angles and make the ideas easier to understand.

Every night we ask Allah to protect us from the envier. Have you ever stopped to ask whether someone else is asking Allah to protect them from you?

Watch what happens when good news is shared in a Muslim gathering.

A brother announces that his son has completed the Qur'an. A sister mentions that her husband has been accepted to study in Madinah. A young teacher's class fills up within a week. Someone's small business finally takes off.

Everyone says masha'Allah. Everyone smiles.

But somewhere in that room, a chest tightens. A smile stays on the face but leaves the eyes. A voice says, a little too quickly, "Yes, but…"

Perhaps that chest is yours.

Nobody talks about this disease, because nobody admits to having it. A man will confess that he struggles with Fajr long before he confesses that he cannot bear to see his brother blessed. And that is exactly why it survives. It hides behind prayer mats, beards, hijabs, lecture seats, and "concern for the deen."

Every night we recite:

وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ

"And from the evil of an envier when he envies."
— *Surah Al-Falaq (113:5)*

We read it as a shield against others yet we almost never read it as a mirror.

*The first sin in the heavens, and the first sin on the earth*

Before there was a single human sin, there was envy. Iblis looked at Adam, honoured by Allah, and could not bear it. "I am better than him," he said. The scholars of tafsir noted that the first sin by which Allah was disobeyed in the heavens was envy, and the first sin by which He was disobeyed on the earth was envy too.

Because the first blood ever spilled on this earth was spilled over it:

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ابْنَيْ آدَمَ بِالْحَقِّ إِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ الْآخَرِ قَالَ لَأَقْتُلَنَّكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ

"And recite to them, in truth, the story of the two sons of Adam, when they both offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them and not from the other. He said: 'I will surely kill you.' The other said: 'Allah only accepts from those who are mindful of Him.'"
— *Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:27)*

Look closely at what they were jealous over.

Not money. Not land. Not status in the market. *An act of worship.* One brother's offering was accepted, and the other could not live with it.

So do not think envy is only a disease of worldly people. The very first envy on the earth was between two brothers standing before Allah with offerings in their hands.

*"It shaves the religion"*

The Prophet ﷺ warned us it would come for us, the way it came for those before us:

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ:
دَبَّ إِلَيْكُمْ دَاءُ الْأُمَمِ قَبْلَكُمْ: الْحَسَدُ وَالْبَغْضَاءُ، هِيَ الْحَالِقَةُ، لَا أَقُولُ تَحْلِقُ الشَّعَرَ، وَلَكِنْ تَحْلِقُ الدِّينَ

*The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:*
"The disease of the nations before you has crept into you: envy and hatred. It is the shaver. I do not say it shaves hair, but it shaves the religion."
— *Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi (graded hasan)*

*Crept.* It does not arrive with an announcement. It creeps.

Think about a razor. It does not tear the hair out in one pull. It moves across the skin quietly, stroke by stroke, and when it is finished the head is bare. That is what envy does to a person's religion. One resentful thought. One cold salaam. One "did you hear what happened to him?" asked with a little too much interest. Stroke by stroke, until a man who once loved his brothers for the sake of Allah finds nothing left in his heart for them at all.

Notice who those "nations before you" were. Allah told us about the People of the Book, people with scripture, with scholars, with prophets sent among them, who saw the truth clearly and still turned from it "out of envy from within themselves" (Al-Baqarah 2:109).

Knowledge did not protect them. Scripture did not protect them.

What makes us so sure it will protect us?

Theme: In your time of crisis, see the divine guidance from Allah

فَأَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡهِ أَنِ ٱصۡنَعِ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ بِأَعۡیُنِنَا وَوَحۡیِنَا فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ فَٱسۡلُكۡ فِیهَا مِن كُلࣲّ زَوۡجَیۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِ وَأَهۡلَكَ إِلَّا مَن سَبَقَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ مِنۡهُمۡۖ وَلَا تُخَـٰطِبۡنِی فِی ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ إِنَّهُم مُّغۡرَقُونَ

“Then We revealed to him: ‘Build the Ark under Our watchful eyes and according to Our revelation. When Our command comes and the oven bursts forth, take aboard a pair of every species and your family, except those against whom the decree has already passed. And do not plead with Me concerning the wrongdoers; they will certainly be drowned.’”

LESSONS:
1. Trust in Allah requires preparation. Prophet Nūḥ relied completely upon Allah, yet he was commanded to build the Ark. Tawakkul is not passivity; it is obedience, effort and reliance upon Allah.

2. Divine protection often comes through instructions that must be followed precisely. The Ark was built under Allah’s watch and according to His revelation. Safety lies in following divine guidance, not merely in doing what appears reasonable to us.

3. Do not abandon a righteous mission because people ridicule it. Building an Ark before the flood must have seemed absurd to many, but public mockery cannot invalidate a command from Allah.

4. Family ties cannot save anyone without faith and righteousness. Even the household of a Prophet was not protected merely by blood relationship. Before Allah, everyone is ultimately accountable for personal belief and conduct.

5. When corruption reaches its appointed consequence, regret may come too late. Allah gives people time to repent, but His patience should never be mistaken for approval. Persistent injustice eventually brings consequences to individuals and societies.

O Allah, keep us constantly under Your care and guidance. Grant us the faith to obey You, the wisdom to prepare for difficulties, and the courage to remain steadfast when others mock the truth. Protect us, our families, our work and the Muslim Ummah from every visible and hidden calamity. Save us from injustice and from the consequences of our sins, and admit us into the Ark of Your mercy in this world and the Hereafter. Āmīn.
