QB Checkdown Rate: Justin Fields

NOTE: In the NFL, a checkdown refers to a short, safe pass from the quarterback to a receiver, often a running back or tight end, who is relatively close to the line of scrimmage.

Now....how do we judge the percentage of check downs to the WR and TE in this case its very hard, unless you watch every game every play.

I keep seeing this Breece Hall narrative, that Justin Fields leads the NFL in check down rate... so lets take a deep dive look to actual checkdowns to the RB.

2022: His best finish at QB7 Overall #DaBears
- 5.3% Rate (27th)
- Baker Mayfield 11.9% (1st)

2023: 13 games played (missed weeks 8-10)
- 370 attempts, 17.3% (3rd), 150 min pass attempts
but.....

The Checkdown narrative for the Detroit Lions in 2024 and Jared Goff was 18.8% (8th) , Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon Ra feasted on short screen plays. With Amon-Ra having 10 screen plays receptions.

Aaron Glenn coming from Detroit has alluded to a committee and a possibly trade rumor for Breece is they are not competitive. Braelon is an amazing big boy pass catching back as well, as shown last year with 19 re, 148 yds, 1TD. In limited work.

In Conclusion, yes Breece is a very good pass catcher. But the narrative that he going to feast bc a check down number that isn't fully valuated toward the RB has to stop.
