In May 1914 Gertrude paid her last visit to #Constantinople/#Istanbul on her way back from extended trip through Syria & Arabia which culminated in her being held captive in #Hayal for 10 days. Took "singularly ruinous" French SS Equateur from #Beirut - "doors won't shut and
whirl & now for first time she mentioned being driven up Bosphorus - "most delicious it was" despite two flat tyres. During her stay she called on Harold Nicholson & Vita Sackville-West, then living in #Cihangir. Shortly afterwards she departed from #Sirkeci station to return
Wearied by her long journey & w/her thoughts turned towards home, Gertrude left few details of her last but one visit to #Constantinople/#Istanbul in 1911. Frustratingly, she wrote that she had procured "a much coveted permission" to visit the "Old Serai" (Topkapı Sarayı/Palace)
but then omitted to leave any account of visit. The last of her photo albums show that she did indeed go there & showcase how little its appearance has changed since then. Unmentioned goes a repeated walk along the Land Walls revealed by the same photo album - several
