Is this becoming the new norm? Defend every petty criminal as a "Sikh," threaten states with mob pressure when individuals are caught after committing crimes, and then have political religious leaders demand concessions from the authorities while playing victim.

The larger question is: what was the need for Nihang groups to travel to Uttarakhand with swords last night when a previous Nihang group, which had occupied the Nirgasu Gurdwara, was already sent to Punjab without any action taken against them by the state authorities and when the toll-related incident was already being addressed?

On top of that, why is he demanding the release of individuals who assaulted locals with swords because they did not want to pay the toll? Had the blows landed just a few inches differently, the victims could have lost their lives. Furthermore, why is he blaming the state authorities for stopping armed Nihang groups during the night when the rest of the Sikh community continues to travel to Hemkund Sahib as usual?

Instead of condemning the alleged actions of these individuals, he is portraying them as "Sikh" victims, effectively giving a communal identity to conduct that deserves condemnation.

THE COLLECTIVE THREAT ON THE ROADS OF UTTARAKHAND AND HIMACHAL PRADESH

The roads of Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh are where much of North India converges during the summer months. Every year, millions of tourists, pilgrims & local residents share the same narrow, limited mountain infrastructure. Increasingly & alarmingly these roads have become sites of road rage, conflicts & societal tension.

If I were to speak specifically about Uttarakhand, the state government appears clueless & pardon my saying, impotent in the face of the growing number of conflicts unfolding on the state's roads. As always, the cliched strategy is one of complete denial & ignorance. It is hoped that each incident will fade away & forgotten. Unfortunately for those who believe in these theories & approaches, reality is different.

In Uttarakhand, we have recently seen tensions involving visitors from Haryana and Nihang groups at Karanprayag & Nagrasu. These may appear as isolated episodes, but together they point towards a larger challenge of managing social tensions, tourism pressures & law/order risks in a rapidly changing state. In the face of these changes, our govt is entirely on the back foot with little evidence of any strategy or prevention ideas.

I agree that governments, police forces & district administrations cannot be present every 5 metres. However, they must recognise that they are confronting a new form of conflict that unfolds rapidly on roads, escalates rapidly & is amplified instantly through social media. By the time authorities react (i.e if they choose to), millions may have already viewed the incident online.

How to move ahead? In my view, the need of the hour is the acceptance of fresh challenges, new societal tensions & the need to be proactive. Old is not gold & our govt/police/systems need to brace themselves & be ready for a far more volatile world.

Reshu Gupta (27 yrs) is a BSc. graduate who didn't get a job. She started a momo vending cart, 25 days ago.

On June 19, police were clearing vendors from the roadside, as the CM's convoy was about to pass.

Reshu couldn't move her cart quickly as it contained boiling water.

Her family alleges, a policeman pushed the cart and spilled the boiling water on her.
