Two Aussie-based players create history as Eritrea return to the international stage with a win ๐ช๐ท๐ฆ๐บ
The last time the Eritrean men's national team had featured in an AFCON competitive match was 18 years ago. Today, Eritrea broke their absence with a win over Eswatini and two Australian-based players were both heavily involved ๐ต๐ด๐ข
Western United U21 goalkeeper Yonathan Sultan and Preston Lions defender Jamal Ali both featured for Eritrea in their first-leg 2-0 2027 AFCON qualifying win over Eswatini.
In just under a week, Eritrea, with a two-goal advantage, will travel to Lobamba to take on Eswatini in the second leg of the tie.

South Melbourne FC is delighted to welcome James Lackay to the club ahead of the 2026 season.
A fast and direct winger, Lackay arrives from Melbourne Victoryโs NPL squad, where he featured regularly at senior level in 2025 and consistently posed a strong attacking threat.
The 18-year-old has also gained valuable experience abroad, having been selected as part of the FC Bayern Munich World Squad, further adding to his development at a young age. We are looking forward to seeing James play a role across the 2026 campaign in Blue and White.
Football Director Peter Kokotis said:
โJames is a young player with real upside. He has pace, confidence in one-v-one situations and has already shown he can perform at senior NPL level. His experience both locally and overseas makes him a great fit for where we are heading, and we are excited to see his growth at Lakeside Stadium.โ

A warm welcome in Red โค๏ธ
Fresh off his official announcement, Ajak Riak has wasted little time settling into life at Adelaide United - embracing the city, the squad, and the opportunity to pull on the red shirt.

Once youโre past 20 yrs, salary cap combined with a preference for recycled & overseas signings over NPL talent shut doors fast. Late bloomers or those who miss right time/place lose out massively.
Gap in the system extremely difficult for NPL players to break into the ALeague
The perception of NPL players needs to change in this country. I think @AusChampionship did a good job at showing the talent level that is on display, but there's no reason Abdallah shouldn't be signed at an A-Leagues club (unless he doesn't want to, which would also be fair)
