People need to stop rewriting history
Cristiano Ronaldo was NOT a midfielder at Manchester United. He was a pure, attacking winger.
Early in his United career (2003โ2009), Ronaldo played predominantly on the flanks especially the right wing. His role wasnโt to control tempo or dictate play like a midfielder. Instead, he stayed wide, isolated defenders, and attacked them 1v1 with pace, stepovers, and direct dribbling. His job was to create chaos, not structure.
A true midfielder operates centrally, contributes heavily to buildup play, distributes passes, and controls rhythm. That was never Ronaldoโs primary responsibility. Even when he improved tactically under Alex Ferguson, his evolution was from a flashy winger into a goal-scoring wide forward not into a midfielder.
Why didnโt he evolve to a 10 ๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ
Now compare him to David Beckham:
Beckham played on the right side too, but his style was completely different. He functioned more like a wide midfielder:
1.He was deeper and more disciplined positionally
2.His game was built on crossing, long passing, and playmaking
3.He contributed significantly to buildup and team structure
4. He wasnโt reliant on beating players with dribbling
Ronaldo, on the other hand:
1. Played higher up the pitch
2. Focused on direct attacking, dribbling, and scoring
3. Frequently shoot at any position
4.Had freedom to roam and finish moves rather than build them
So while both started wide,
Beckham = wide midfielder/playmaker evolved to a CM
Ronaldo = explosive winger/forward evovled to a ST
Calling Ronaldo a midfielder is like misunderstanding his entire role he wasnโt there to manage the game, he was there to decide it.
