🇬🇲🇬🇲: Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie has broken his silence amid mounting public criticism over a secretly recorded private conversation that led to allegations of him being tribalistic and specifically anti-Mandinka, explaining in a detailed statement that the discussion arose from a cordial meeting at his residence with a delegation from Niamina West, including Hon. Birom J.S. Sowe, following his attendance at a warmly received community event in Sarre Gainako at the invitation of Omar P. Jallow and his father, where the main topic was concerns over Jallow’s redeployment from the Office of the Vice President and his career uncertainty, during which Njie successfully appealed to GRTS authorities not to sack him.

He expressed deep disappointment that the trusted, informal conversation was recorded without consent and leaked, while categorically denying any tribalist or anti-Mandinka sentiments as inconsistent with his life, noting that his first wife is Mandinka—with opposition UDP leader Ousainu Darboe playing a prominent role in their marriage—and that many of his closest friends, colleagues, personal assistants, and security detail are Mandinkas, and he refuted claims of seeking ethnicity-based appointments such as a Fula orderly. Njie apologised for any misunderstandings or inconvenience caused by the recording, including references to President Adama Barrow and Hon. Lamin Queen Jammeh with no disrespect intended, and rendered an unreserved apology to all Gambians for any wrong done during his public service, while reaffirming his commitment to national unity, peace, and stability, urging citizens to reject ethnic divisions and focus on mutual respect and collective progress.

🇬🇲🇬🇲: More than 200 Gambian pilgrims departed on Tuesday for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, marking the third batch to leave Banjul International Airport this week. Following the successful airlift of the first two groups, the pilgrims travelled under the supervision of the Gambia Hajj Commission and airport officials. Emotional scenes unfolded at the airport as families and friends gathered to bid them farewell. Many pilgrims expressed deep gratitude and excitement, describing the journey as a lifelong dream and major blessing. Among those departing were Sulayman Darboe, Sarjo Jallow, and Binta Jammeh. The pilgrims are expected to join millions of Muslims in Makkah and Madinah for the annual pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam, with further departures scheduled in the coming days.
