BREAKING: Mainers for Working Families is partnering with @unduemeddebt to purchase and forgive $1.8 million in medical debt for over 1,500 Mainers across the state.
According to the nonprofit Mainers For Working Families, more than 1,500 Mainers will receive letters in the mail notifying them that their debt has been erased. https://t.co/Cytm5oATuW
No one should go into debt because they require medical care. Canceling debt for 1,500 Mainers isn't exactly justice, but it's the next best thing while we wait for lawmakers to recognize healthcare is a human right. #mepolitics
We’re grateful for the chance to wipe away $1.8 million in medical debt for 1,500 people across Maine. We also know there’s more to be done.
It’s up to our lawmakers in Augusta to make healthcare affordable for everyone in our state and to eliminate medical debt. @unduemeddebt

Take Kimberly Earley from Old Town, who developed Addison’s Disease following the tragic loss of her husband and son 32 years ago.
Due to numerous surgeries and prescriptions, Kim’s accumulated over $2 million in medical debt. She lives on $26,200 a year.
Over the years, due to numerous surgeries, specialist appointments, and prescription medications, Kim Earley has accumulated more than $2,000,000 in medical debt. This is an unacceptable and insurmountable sum. We cannot tolerate such disregard for basic humanity.
We traveled around the state, from Portland to Skowhegan to Old Town, talking to Mainers burdened with medical debt.
Again and again, we heard what we already knew. Healthcare costs are too high in our state, and too many people are struggling to keep up.
We spent three months traveling around the state to meet Mainers and discuss the truly devastating effects medical debt has on their lives.
Check out the first video in our series where we’ll explore the stories of Mainers affected by medical debt.

Two-thirds of Mainers say they'd have a difficult time affording a surprise $500 medical expense, and 4 in 10 have taken on medical debt in the last five years.
Maine can't take this anymore. We need to #EndMedicalDebt.
“More access to housing opportunities paired with health care services... will help people experiencing homelessness find stability and an extended life, as well as a happier and healthier quality of life.”

"You know more sales will help more people get into homes. But the struggle is real. And the struggle is going to continue until we can actually develop and develop in particular the affordable workforce housing. https://t.co/YF9cIDBWeO
Everyone knows Maine is the oldest state in the nation. To avoid an economic disaster, we must begin attracting and retaining young families.
State Senator @MattieforMaine explains how funding #childcare & #PaidLeave helps us do just that.
For too long, out-of-state corporate landlords have been taking advantage of Mainers who are desperate to find housing. State Senator @miketipping explains what the Maine Legislature is doing about it. #mepolitics
When her mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, House Rep. Kristen Cloutier had to serve as her primary caregiver while working a full-time job.
Now, thanks to our forthcoming #PaidLeave program, far fewer Mainers will find themselves in such a dilemma.

“I think that if we had some employees that had access to that in the past, then I would probably still have some who worked with me now."

"There have also been rising housing costs and difficulties getting childcare...All of those things add up to contribute to the issue."
