The woman who taught America to cook was 6ft 2, used butter by the pound on public television for 40 years, and outlived most of the people who told her to stop.
Julia Child was born in California in 1912. She could not cook until she was 36. Then her husband was posted to Paris, she ate a sole fried in butter in Rouen, and that was that.
If you were in America in the 1960s, you remember her. Black and white, a voice like a trombone, dropping things and carrying on. She put a whole chicken on the board, rubbed it with butter, and told you to do the same. Cream went into the sauce. The fat stayed on the roast.
Then the 1980s arrived and the country was ordered onto margarine, skimmed milk and chicken breast with the skin off. Cookery writers fell into line overnight. Julia would not. She said the fear of food was doing more harm than the food. She carried on with the butter, in front of the cameras, while the nutritionists wrote to the network.
She was mocked for it as a relic.
She worked into her 80s, lived on her own, and died in 2004, 2 days short of her 92nd birthday.
The people who built the low fat pyramid have been quietly taking it apart ever since. This January the American government finally turned it upside down.
She did not live to see herself proved right. She just went on cooking as if it had never been in doubt.
When I was a young independista, we used to dream of a paper like @ScotNational--able to capture not just the movement, but to showcase the ideas & principles we'd want the world to know about. Subscribe (£20 for a year!), & you invest in Scotland's future https://t.co/PaciXXd6aA
Our economy isn’t working. It’s built on lies: the myth of growth, the myth that profit comes before people, and the myth that wealth is more important than fairness. If we want a sustainable society, we need a new moral code for the economy.
In this video, I set out ten commandments for a just economy - principles that put people before profit, justice before greed, and sustainability before growth.
These commandments demand:
- People before profit
- Fair rewards for work
- Inclusion, not exclusion
- Respect for the earth
- Finance that serves life
- Fair taxation
- Transparency and accountability
- Measuring what really matters
This is a manifesto for a fair and sustainable economy. One we could all be proud to live in.

We're working really hard on your behalf today, as every day, to tool you up for debate with doubters but lack of support threatens that in the near future.
'Top doctor' is more a top propagandist shamefully using his part-time experience and ignoring these 12 facts to misrepresent NHS Scotland https://t.co/oeGhhVzKxu
If we assume an SNP victory in 2026 then what is the worst scenario? A pro-Union majority. The SNP are then in office but not in power.
It’s entirely possible. Indeed some might argue it’s probable. A minority Indy Holyrood would be a disaster for the SNP as the BritNats sabotaged the agenda for government and blamed the SNP for every failure.
There’s an old phrase - You’re as well being hung for a sheep as a lamb.
What then would be the harm in running 2026 on an explicit manifesto commitment that a majority SNP Govt will be treated as an Indyref mandate that if ignored would trigger an immediate resignation of the new SNP administration followed by a single issue manifesto in the resultant Holyrood election rerun?
@duolingo Hi Duo, for the last couple of days when I do a call with Lily, I then get an option to rate the call - just right etc. But then the continue button doesn’t work and I have to exit the programme and start again. Also I then don’t get the valuable feedback from the call. Jill
Just so everyone knows, there will never be any deals, under any circumstances, between the SNP and Nigel Farage. The SNP stand against his divisive politics.

@JohnSwinney has challenged @AnasSarwar ahead of today’s final budget vote.
If Labour backs:
👷♂️ £25m for Grangemouth
💷 Lower income tax
🏠 Business rates relief
❄️ A universal Winter Fuel Payment
✂️ Ending the two-child cap
Then they must vote for it👇

Posted again huffily because reader numbers at the blog have not satisfied my clearly bloated ego and sense of entitlement after putting together such a definitive demolition of the Unionist view of drug deaths

We really do need to reduce the consumption of ultra-processed foods https://t.co/T2PvbeoqGL Concerns are already being raised about the links between the use of GLP-1 type drugs to control obesity and deaths. Concerns do not prove that the two are linked, but when doctors raise them we should take note, most especially when cutting consumption of mass-produced ultra-processed foods is a much better way to tackle the health crises we face.
