Dallas Police turned to right-wing military intelligence official/Dallas oilman Jack A. Crichton shortly after the assassination to find a Russian translator for questioning Marina Oswald. Crichton recommended Ilya Mamantov, an anti-Communist activist and a Dallas oil company agent.

In 1956, Crichton started up the 488th Military Intelligence Detachment of which he claimed there were "about a hundred men in that unit and about 40-50 of them were from the Dallas Police Department." His close friend, Deputy Police Chief George Lumpkin, and a fellow member of the 488th, drove the pilot car of Kennedy's motorcade.

Crichton knew George de Mohrenschildt and became a director of the H.L. Hunt Foundation in July 1963 and met with the foundation's namesake on 11/23/63. Fellow students in his Texas A&M class included the future mayor of Dallas, Earl Cabell, also an alleged #CIA asset.
