Using data from secondary forest research in Panama and a ‘joint species distribution’ modelling, we examined how life history variation among tropical tree species emerges from environment-dependent trait–demography relationships. https://t.co/xAmZZGwPDy
One of the rarest Pines on the planet- Huon Pine (Lagarostrobus franklinii) Restricted to western Tasmania it survived the breakup of Gondwana 80m yrs ago thanks to Tasmania’s climate. One individual has been dated at 10,000 yrs old. This one is around 1,500yrs young. #Tasmania
What does trait-based competition for resources look like in plant communities? We use process-based models, where individuals compete for explicit resources, to study the emergent shapes of so-called competition functions! These don't look like the commonly used shapes!

Academic writing is wild bc you’ll read four articles just to write one sentence.
Anyway, here’s a thread of resources I’ve been using to speed through this review I’m working on:
I had no idea how much of being a PI was just buying equipment for your students to use for cool research, which you get to hear about while chained to your desk ordering more research supplies.
New #BlueCarbon study out now @SciReports — we report emissions factor from 25 years mangrove forest management. Find out more: https://t.co/DEGewqQkoH
I had my students grade their own final projects and reading their evaluations is honestly a heartwrenching window into internalized gender norms (1/n)
Pls @jjhorgan @KatrineConroy just....please act now. This should be illegal. I saw stumps of 1000 year old trees @SaveFairyCreek flagging tape on 2000 year old yellow cedars. It’s like destroying Pantheon or the Sistine Chapel to make a buck. Enough already. #oldgrowth#bcpoli
Early career researchers (PhDs, Postdocs, others): Take people along. Give credit to young mentees, collaborators, undergrads, & those who help you make progress. Research should be about collaboration, not competition: Authorship, shoutouts at talks, recommending opportunities.
Scyphiphora hydrophylacea is locally uncommon but it is the origin of "Manila", Philippines (from its Tagalog name, "nilad") as it once dominated the coastline there! Awesome example of the long history of #mangroves and people. #ethnobotany#ecology#plants
