Yesterday, 113 new fires were reported nationwide, including seven new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 94 large fires, with 21,854 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

Fire crews continue to engage in initial attack as widespread lightning has added new fire starts across the Northwest, Intermountain West & into the South. Large-fire activity remains concentrated in the Northwest & has increased in the Great Basin, particularly in northern NV.

A large airtanker performs a precision drop on the Timber Fire in Southern California. The Timber fire is located on the @LosPadresNF, and it is approximately 18,000 acres and is 27% contained. Footage was captured by trained professionals, please do not attempt this yourself.

Aircraft are an important tool in wildfire suppression, but they can't put a fire out on their own. Successful suppression of wildfires require firefighters to be on the ground cooling hotspots, constructing firelines, & securing fire perimeters to reduce the potential spread.

Rappel Crews are wildland firefighters who drop directly from hovering helicopters on ropes — often descending into areas that are not easily accessible. Their primary mission is quick initial attack on remote wildfires where traditional firefighting methods are impractical.
