David Jarvis is a citizen of Arlington and recently retired after serving over 34 years as an Assistant United States Attorney.
During the period from late summer to early fall 2022, Mr. Jarvis sent four simple questions to AISD administrators, Superintendent Cavazos, and finally to the elected School Board. Mr. Jarvis asked the Board to reveal what guidance @ArlingtonISD gave to teachers about how teachers should answer a student’s questions regarding sensitive sexually related matters—such as same sex attraction, gender identity, and a biological boy wanting to use the girl’s restrooms/locker rooms. Mr. Jarvis also asked AISD what (if any) guidance they gave to teachers about notifying the parents of students who were asking such sensitive questions.
In response to these emails, the Board refused to be honest and transparent. Since the Board consistently ignored Mr. Jarvis’ emails, he was forced on 11-9-22 to file a formal Level One AISD grievance against the board. The 7 month long grievance process finally ended in a Level Four consolidated grievance hearing on Thursday evening, 6-8-23.
Arlington parents and taxpayers have a clear right to know what policy guidance AISD gives to teachers on how to respond to these questions.
In a shocking act to suppress the truth, the Board ILLEGALLY closed the June 8 hearing to the public, asking them all to leave. Over Mr. Jarvis’ strong objections, the Board turned what should have been an open and honest public meeting into a private closed session that the parents were not privy to.
Superintendent Cavazos committed a lawless act when he unilaterally banned observers without first asking the Board to officially amend the grievance policy. Observers are never mentioned in AISD policy. Which mean that the superintendent is making up policy as he goes regarding level 1,2 and 3 hearings.
Knowing that Mr. Jarvis’ arguments to support his grievances would be recorded and available on the AISD website for public viewing, they closed the hearing to prevent taxpayers from hearing Mr. Jarvis’ arguments. This is a violation of the Texas Open Meetings Act. Shamefully, in the closed hearing, every grievance was denied by every board member.
As elected officials, the AISD school board had a duty to conduct the June 8th grievance hearing in a manner that shows total respect for the right of all AISD taxpayers to know what is going on inside AISD.
Instead, their conduct demonstrated a stunning lack of transparency, and a clear unwillingness to tell the truth.
Shockingly, 7,000 complaints have been filed with the TEA from 2021 to today. Only 25 have actually been heard.
Yes! 25. And only ruled 2 times in favor of the parent.
To Arlington ISD, your decision to hide and suppress the truth from AISD voters will have consequences at the ballot box.
You should be profoundly ashamed of your conduct, conduct will be remedied by electing future school board members who will render proper respect to citizens.
To that end, I and others will support a united slate of qualified candidates, beginning with the next election.
Mr. David Jarvis and Buddy Saunders will be just two of the many people bringing their skills and experience to the table. They know how to get things done. They know how to turn out a vote, and they know how to do it in a cost-effective grassroots way.
What the children of Arlington and their parents most need is a school board that works for them, and not for an army of bureaucrats with a very different and hidden agenda.
If the Board refuses to address this violation of state law – that will be the subject of a new grievance filed soon. We will continue to place pressure until they agree to be transparent with all Arlington ISD parents, or until they are replaced. #ArlingtonISD
