SCOTUS recently dropped a 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais on April 29. They struck down the state’s second majority-Black congressional district as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. Louisiana drew it after lower courts said the old map violated the Voting Rights Act, but the Court said race can’t be the main driver and VRA compliance doesn’t automatically justify it.
Classic gerrymandering fight going back to the 1800s, but this one lands hard on race-based districting. Both parties have drawn weird maps for power, Dems in places like Illinois/California, GOP under VRA pressure in the South. This ruling weakens the race-as-excuse playbook.
Bigger underlying fight still open: counting total population (including noncitizens in sanctuary cities) for representation. That part didn’t get decided here. Map drawing for 2026 elections is now scrambled in Louisiana.
