General Kurt Waeger honours surrendering French Soldiers after the Siege of Lille, May 1940.
In recognition of the French garrison's stubborn defence, Waeger granted them the traditional honours of war. The French troops marched through Lille with rifles shouldered.
Every June, residents of Austria’s Tyrolean Alps light fires arranged in the shape of a cross and heart to commemorate the divine deliverance of their ancestors from Napoleon’s armies in 1796.
But in 1938 the fires were arranged to show another message...
Red Cross nurses Ilse Schulz and Grete Fock were decorated with the Iron Cross 2nd class. As a part of the Afrika Korps, they were both honored for their heroism in Africa. Even during an air raid they remained in the small surgery tent.
