It’s striking how these victim statements often sound scripted and uniform — the repeated emphasis on “our loved ones” can feel almost like a prepared hostage note.

What concerns me is how certain voices in positions of power then weaponise that genuine grief to shut down any fair or reasonable criticism of the wider issues.

There is a palpable shift in public mood. More and more ordinary people are becoming deeply frustrated. I do not condone the violence that occurred in Belfast, but if those in authority continue to ignore legitimate concerns, I genuinely fear where this will lead.

Simply burying our heads in the sand won’t solve anything. Cracking down on every protestor won’t solve it either.

This tension will only keep growing unless politicians and institutions start properly listening. As more disturbing incidents come to light and nothing meaningful changes, more ordinary, previously moderate people will feel pushed toward radical positions. That benefits no one.

The individual in this case essentially earned himself a Darwin Award. If he had been 18 at the time, the outcome should have been far harsher.

This wasn’t some random street fight, it was a school sponsored sporting event. Regardless of who started the verbal exchange, the conflict ended with a stabbing. The central question is:

Why did he bring a knife to a school track meet in the first place?

That single decision reveals intent to harm.

You don’t carry a knife to a high school athletic event unless you’re prepared to use it.

For a 17-year-old, a sentence of 35 years to life is appropriate. If he had been 18 or older,

the death penalty would have been justified.
