Load the salute cannons, raise the flags, and decorate in red, white, and blue, because we’re just around the corner from our annual Independence Day weekend celebration! Enjoy seeing Fort Larned come to life and listen and learn as we look at 250 years of military history.
It’s not often that we get a layer of morning mist at Fort Larned, but we had the perfect cool morning for it this last Memorial Day weekend. It can make you quickly forget how bustling this place used to be.

If the conditions are just right and you know where to look, you can see where the foundation for the Guardhouse was laid. However, this structure was never built beyond its foundation as it was determined to convert the Blockhouse into the Guardhouse as a cost saving measure.
This mailbox is one of the few items we have from Ft Larned’s military era in our collection. Within would be placed official Ft Larned correspondence that couldn’t be verbally communicated, was in the Adjutant’s Office, and was labeled with the various recipients.

At our most recent Mess & Muster event, a hailstorm created perfect conditions for a thin layer of mist to lay over our cemetery. While it was a unique sight and experience, it makes you wonder how the original occupants of Fort Larned dealt with freak storms.

Which rank would you prefer to be? The major with his entire house to himself and full command of the entire post or the first sergeant with his quarters in the Orderly Room and command of an entire company.

Foggy mornings at Fort Larned NHS give a weird feeling suddenly not being able to see the vast prairie. It makes one wonder what those who lived here thought of foggy days. Was it welcomed or did it increase anxiety as anyone coming through the fog was unknown?

Which rank would you want to be? The high responsibility and command level of a major or the mid-level command level of a first lieutenant. Keep in mind that more than rank separated the two. A major received five rooms versus the lieutenant’s one for their quarters.
