Jimmy "the Weasel" Fratianno died peacefully at age 80 from Alzheimer's disease in June of 1993, a rare end for a man who spent decades in organized crime.

Born in Naples, Italy, in 1913, Fratianno immigrated to the United States as an infant and grew up in Cleveland's Little Italy, where he received an early education in crime. He earned his nickname after fleeing "like a weasel" from a pursuing police officer, though few dared to call him that to his face. By age 14, he had entered the gambling business. He later rose through the ranks in Los Angeles and became a made man in 1947.

His ties to Johnny Rosselli, Moe Dalitz, and the Teamsters brought him into Las Vegas, where he knew Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and visited him at the Flamingo shortly before Siegel's 1947 murder. In 1965, Fratianno even attempted to gain control of the Tally Ho, the Strip hotel that would become the Aladdin, but the deal ultimately fell apart.

After serving time at Chino prison, Fratianno broke with the Mafia in 1977 and entered the federal Witness Protection Program. Fratianno's testimony revealed Johnny Rosselli's role in the sale of the Desert Inn to Howard Hughes and the Mob's involvement in the CIA's failed Operation Mongoose, a plot to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
