Argentina's new government gives early nod to bitcoin, says crypto can be used in contracts

Argentina, under the new administration of President Javier Milei, has reaffirmed the legality of setting contracts in bitcoin, marking a significant move toward crypto adoption.

Diana Modino, Argentina's Minister of Foreign Relations and International Commerce, confirmed this stance, indicating that bitcoin can be used in official contracts within the country.

In a statement shared on X, where Modino boasts a substantial following, she highlighted Argentina's ratification and confirmation of bitcoin's validity for contract agreements.

She clarified that this extends to other cryptocurrencies as well, citing existing laws that permit various forms of agreements, similar to transactions involving quantities of livestock or agricultural products.

Despite not outlining specific forthcoming crypto-related measures, this early affirmation aligns with President Milei's views on monetary policy, particularly amidst Argentina's challenges with hyperinflation and currency devaluation.

Milei perceives Bitcoin as a tool to counteract the inefficiencies inherent in centralized financial systems, as noted in a report by Grayscale Investments.

While some Argentinians have turned to digital currencies amid the depreciation of the local peso, the formal validation of bitcoin within contracts signifies a potential preliminary step toward broader crypto adoption in the country.

Mauricio Di Bartolomeo, co-founder of Ledn, suggested that legal transactions in bitcoin and stablecoins could soon become a reality for Argentinians following Milei's election.

This move could pave the way for wider-scale cryptocurrency utilization within the nation.
