🚨Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar instructed the Foreign Ministry three weeks ago to open quiet talks with the far-right parties in France, Spain and Sweden that have until now been officialy boycotted by the Israeli government, three Foreign Ministry officials told me
🚨Why it matters: This is a dramatic policy shift on the part of the Israeli government, which now views these parties as legitimate and is prepared to maintain official relations with them
🚨"We do not agree with the entire platform of these parties or with every statement made by their leaders, but we believe that we can have a dialogue with them”, a senior Foreign Ministry official told me
🚨One of the parties is the “National Rally" in France, which formerly called the "National Front" and founded in 1972 by the anti-Semitic politician and Holocaust denier Jean-Marie Le Pen
🚨The major Jewish organizations in France are boycotting the party and in the last presidential election called to vote for President Macron on order to block the party’s candidate Marine Le Pen
🚨The other two parties are the Spanish far-right and nationalist Vox party and the Swedish far-right party the Swedish Democrats
🚨Behind the scenes: The process of making the European far-right parties “Kosher” began during former Foreign Minister Israel Katz term. Two other far-right parties that were under review by the Israeli foreign ministry are the Austrian Freedom Party and the German AfD
🚨When the current Foreign Minister Gideon Saar took office, he was presented with the findings of the review, which included an examination of the different European far-right parties according to their support for Israel, their positions toward the Jewish community and the Jewish community's attitude toward them and their renunciation of anti-Semitism and Nazi past
🚨A senior Foreign Ministry official told me Saar decided to begin contacts with the National Rally in France, the Spanish Vox Party, and the Swedish Democrats Party, but ruled out at this stage any ties with the German AfD or the Austrian Freedom party
🚨Saar instructed the Israeli embassies in Paris, Madrid, and Stockholm to inform the heads of Jewish organizations of the decision and coordinate with them in advance of any contacts with the three parties, a senior Foreign Ministry official said
🚨In recent weeks several meetings were held by Israeli diplomats with representatives of the three far-right parties. A senior Foreign Ministry official noted that it was decided to hold the meetings in a low profile and without any announcements to the media
