Malaria Modelling symposium in Cameroon. 1st of its kind organized by @HealthOrganisa4 together with @AMMnetwork, @CameroonPamca and @cam_crid . An enriching opportunity for participants as they learnt much about modelling and as tool for decision making.
Women are 4-times more likely to have autoimmune diseases than men. Why is this?
From Dou et al. in Cell, today
In females, the second X chromosome is silenced by a long non-coding RNA, called Xist (pronounced 'exist') - males don't express Xist
Xist, together with almost 100 unique proteins, wraps itself around the second X chromosome, silencing it. It's thought that Xist-protein complexes are highly immunogenic, and may represent targets for autoantibodies
Dou et al. devised a system to induce expression of Xist in male mice. They found that Xist expression led to the production of autoantibodies, similar to levels found in female mice (RIBO P0/P2 are lupus autoantibodies, CENPA/B are scleroderma autoantibodies):
In a mouse model, these autoantibodies in Xist-expressing males were sufficient to cause significant lupus pathology (including in the kidney and the lung):
In humans, autoantibodies against the Xist ribonucleoprotein complex were enriched in female patients with lupus, scleroderma, and dermatomyositis
Therefore, Xist may solve the puzzle of female-biased autoimmunity

Dear Ojeiwa Omogbai,
Thank you for your feedback. Actually, you might not have your facts correct. This is not peculiar to Nigeria. There are PhD holders driving buses in England. Please Google. PhD holders are working at fast-food chains in Canada. Please research it. Canada has 235,000 PhD holders, and they have room for only 23% of them in academic fields. Therefore, the vast majority must make do with whatever work they find. This is because only 2% of jobs in Canada require a PhD. Most PhDs in Canada earn the same amount of money as a secretary. Again, do fact-check me.
Brian Acton and Jan Koum are both highly educated from Ivy League schools, like Stanford. Yet, they were unemployed until frustration drove them to invest WhatsApp.
Australia has more PhDs than there are academic jobs for them, forcing many into unskilled jobs. Again, please fact-check me. The challenge is that many Nigerians have a negative bias against Nigeria. It is a deep-seated inferiority complex that sees everything Nigeria as negative.
Are you aware that Nigeria was the first nation on Earth to exit the Wild Ebola Virus epidemic due to our superior public healthcare? The major challenge with our healthcare is not even funding. It is the fact that our healthcare professionals are so good that other countries poach them. And I mean developed nations.
Nigeria (Lagos) is now a top destination for health tourists from Europe. So, please stop talking down on Nigeria. We are not where we need to be, but we will not get there by talking down on our country.
But as to the specific cases of unemployed PhDs in Nigeria, the reason is that a lot of them get PhDs in the social sciences and liberal arts and other disciplines that have little relevance to the developmental challenges Nigeria faces. I cannot see a PhD in engineering, mathematics, medicine, or other scientific fields looking for a menial job in Nigeria.
Thanks again, and may God bless you.
