@Melaniegouby hi, just a counter-point, you do realise this was one of the longest running campaigns at UCL and activists faced repression of protest rights, surveillance and threats of disciplinary action over the 7 years? it's hardly a step-ahead...
hopefully this will be seen as a call to action to democratise all higher education institutions, into accessible, ethical educational places for all! direct action works!
UCL DIVESTS AFTER 7 YEARS OF SUPPRESSING STUDENT PROTEST !!
UCL originally held around £16 million in fossil fuel shares, notably in Royal Dutch Shell, and yesterday they made the decision to divest completely!
press release here: https://t.co/gXgTrZmnm8
Divesting after years of students’ campaign should NOT be perceived as the symbol of positive change from UCL management but the proof that the latter has tried, by all means, to rip us of our right to make higher education better, more accessible and for its students.
Although we are pleased UCL has finally divested, we are disappointed that today’s decision makes UCL one of the last UK universities to divest and after a history of intense clamp-down on student protest, threats of disciplinary action, policing and surveillance of activists

On September 20th we should ditch work and go on strike for the climate.
Unions, climate organisations and young people are organising for the first general strike in Britain since 1926.

'Don’t buy the greenwash. Shell’s initiatives, which have won over many conservation groups, are dwarfed by its investment in oil and gas.'
Legitimising and financing companies like Shell are a huge part of the problem.
@ucl needs to DIVEST now.

@conservationucl As much as homes for bees is great, this is a prime example of greenwashing by huge corporations that are largely responsible for environmental destruction and thus the declining population of bees
Rather than confronting their financing of climate breakdown through fossil fuel infrastructure #Barclays decided to act with aggression towards protesters at their AGM today #DivestBarclays
Beautiful scenes yesterday at the #YouthStrike4Climate! Love and respect to everyone who come out. In London, thousands of students from UCL, SOAS, LSE, Imperial and KCL marched together to Parliament square! Stay tuned for more collective action for climate justice! 🌏🙌
We take our inspiration from the Quebec student movement which used a square of red felt as their symbol. The idea would be to create a sense of spectacle, and visually demonstrate the effects of climate change!
@GretaThunberg we're involved in the #YouthStrike4ClimateUK - we have a plan to hand out hundreds of dust masks at the climate strike in London to make a statement about air pollution, and create a symbol for the movement. Could you encourage others to wear dust masks tmr?
