It’s time for @hmtreasury to call a moratorium on the VAT on school fees to stop many more schools going under.
The country cannot afford to lose its important educational infrastructure so let’s stop and think before it’s too late.
Show some guts @10DowningStreet
So you'll listen to @missgemcollins about why school matters but not the tens of thousands of children in Indy schools who no longer have a school or a place? Fun fact - Gemma went to a private school - did you know that before you had your chat? More importantly @missgemcollins did YOU know @bphillipsonMP taxes kids just like you were. Nice.
“It was reported last week that Labour’s VAT raid on private schools has cost the Scottish economy £60m & 900 jobs in its 1st year of operation. It is difficult to think of another revenue-raising policy in recent times which has failed so spectacularly.”

@bphillipsonMP@ObserverUK@RSylvester1 Meanwhile yesterday hundred of kids devastated to be forced out their safe amazing school, teachers facing unemployment, parents stressed out their heads, careers shattered, education and life dreams disrupted and friendships left in tatters because Vat on education! Disgusting!
@sharrond62 Along with nearly 200 kids and their parents scrabbling for new schools when exams are weeks away! My current reality! Totally agree how any govt can tax education, cause schools to close, kids life’s to be turned upside down but look at cutting tax for pubs ! Say that out loud!

The British have had enough.
Over 150,000 people have now signed our Lucy Connolly related petition - I am taking it to Parliament.
The British people have an instinctive sense of fair play, and jailing a young mother over a social media post is NOT fair play.
Free the political prisoners, @Keir_Starmer.
Lucy Connolly is a mother. She has a 12 year old daughter. She posted one stupid thing on social media, and soon deleted it. She was sentenced to 31 months in prison. Torn away from her family, for ONE stupid social media post. She now sits behind bars. This is INSANE.
Rapists and paedophiles get let off with less. This is not the Britain I know and love.
I’ve been pushing and pushing, trying everything possible as an MP. I even questioned Starmer on it in the Commons at PMQs. Quite frankly, his answer was total bullshit. I tabled a motion, gaining support from Labour and Tory MPs. No progress.
We ran out of road in Westminster. So next, is this petition - bringing it to the British people.
Lucy, and others like her, should not be in prison for foolish things they posted on the internet.
If we can get enough support, we can get a debate in Parliament. That brings media, attention and MPs. It can make a difference.
I’ve been talking to Ray, Lucy’s husband, and he and the family are fully supportive of this petition.
Lucy said one stupid thing and got locked up for it. Ripped away from her young daughter. You could be next. Please just think about that. It’s not just Lucy. Others are imprisoned for similar.
My heart goes out to them. It’s all just so disgusting, and if I can use my elected position to do anything it has to be worth a go...
If you can take the time to sign and share, it will be hugely appreciated.
Let's try for Lucy, Ray, their daughter and the many others like them.

Once upon a time, there was a boy called Keir. He grew up in a secure home and attended a great school. When his school converted to an independent one, the local council paid his fees to make sure his education wasn’t disrupted. Lucky Keir.
Now, as Prime Minister, he’s imposed VAT on school fees—forcing thousands of children out of their schools, unlike the fortunate boy he once was.
Even more telling, the High Court has ruled his tax interferes with the right to education and disproportionately harms SEND children. Yet, Keir the human rights lawyer says it's tough but fair.
Two-Tier Keir — is this the legacy your parents would have wanted? #EducationNotTax
Just out of interest - if you are a State parent who was counting on VAT on education raising the standards of your school - you need to look elsewhere as that money is going into housing (@Keir_Starmer confirms). If you are a SEND parent in State looking for support particularly in EHCP's you also need to look elsewhere as that system is now being flooded with Indy kids and EHCPS look slated to be 'retired.' Turns out @bphillipsonMP didn't care about the 93% either. Ooooh.
