📝 Director's Note EP4: Did the song "Korn (Before)" come before the script, or after it?

After we had the story outline for Ticket to Heaven, one thing we kept thinking about was: if we were going to tell this story in 1996, how could we make the audience truly feel that era? Beyond the locations, costumes, or overall atmosphere, another thing that came to mind was music. For teenagers in every generation, love, friendship, dreams, and music have always gone hand in hand.
So we began thinking about what songs could bring viewers back to that period of time. And while we were thinking about Barth's character, the song "Korn (Before)" suddenly came to mind. Its lyrics, melody, and a certain feeling within the song made us feel that it fit this character perfectly. It became one of the songs selected from the very early stages of the project's development.
At that time, we chose the song purely based on feeling. In fact, we barely knew anything about its background. I remember that after the team learned we were going to use it, someone asked me, "Do you know the story behind this song?" And my answer was, "No." At that point, all I felt was that it suited the story, suited the character, and suited the emotions we wanted to convey.
But when I later went back and researched the song's actual background, I was genuinely amazed. Certain aspects of its origin and meaning connected perfectly with what happens in the story. In the end, "Korn (Before)" became a complete part of the storytelling in this episode, and the scene built around it became one of my favorite scenes in the episode.
"Korn (Before)" may be a song that many people have heard before. But we believe that after this scene airs, some viewers may find themselves returning to the same song and listening to it with feelings that are no longer quite the same.
Just like we did.

We consulted a Catholic friend regarding this, and they said that for those who grew up in a strict and devoted Catholic family, they usually don't see problems as heavy as they actually are, as long as they have Him. They believe what they're experiencing is simply a trial, and all they need to do is trust Him and pray to Him.

​Maybe that's why Tanrak said, "I'll pray to God for your mom," because that is the mindset he grew up with. But how can he tell Barth to just trust God, when Barth doesn't even believe in Him?

​Tanrak is used to people trusting God all the time, believing that no problem in this world is too big because "we have Him." But now, he is encountering someone who doesn't believe at all. How can Tanrak console Barth when all he knows how to do is depend on God? He can't just tell him to pray and let God hear his thoughts and battles. What alternative way can he find to comfort Barth, when all he has ever known to do when things get heavy is pray?
