🤘⚽️ Some footballers were just quintessentially rock ’n’ roll, be they music buffs, style icons, and ultimate hellraisers – or all of the above
🧵🎸 FourFourTwo picks the game's most rock 'n' roll players 👇
🤠 FRANK WORTHINGTON
Whether he was turning up to England U23s in cowboy boots or failing a Liverpool medical because a week in Majorca with five women spiked his blood pressure, Frank Worthington lived life in the fast lane. The iconic forward worshipped Elvis Presley, regularly dressed up as The King, and famously scored that magical juggling volley for Bolton against Ipswich.
🎵 LEIGHTON BAINES
The former Everton left-back became a Premier League indie icon over his 15-year career. Famous for taking a guitar on England away trips and penning a music blog for Everton's website, Baines was tipping bands like Tame Impala and The xx before they blew up—and even inspired an Irish band to name themselves The Baines.
🎰 GÜNTER NETZER
While his 1960s German teammates listened to schlager, Netzer was blasting Dylan and The Rolling Stones. Mönchengladbach's long-haired playmaker famously subbed himself on to score the winning goal in the 1973 DFB-Pokal final, crashed a yellow Ferrari, and once secretly flew in disguise to Las Vegas for Frank Sinatra's daughter's wedding while out injured.
🥁 PETR ČECH
The legendary Premier League goalkeeper swapped keeping clean sheets for hitting drum beats. Čech launched a YouTube channel drumming along to System Of A Down, Rammstein, and Nirvana, jammed with folk rock band Wills & The Willing, and even recorded a charity single alongside Queen's Roger Taylor.
✍️ SLAVEN BILIĆ
Raised on AC/DC and Iron Maiden, the former Croatia defender and manager played guitar for rock band Rawbau—even recording Croatia’s Euro 2008 anthem Vatreno Ludilo. Bilić credits writing riffs and playing guitar with saving his mental health when injury forced his early retirement from playing.
🌹 GERMÁN BURGOS
Former Argentina and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Germán 'El Mono' Burgos took the mic as the wild frontman for his band The Garb. Known for performing topless on stage with raw, rasping vocals inspired by Guns N' Roses, he later served as Diego Simeone’s intimidating assistant at Atleti.
🐴 STAN BOWLES
Voted QPR’s greatest ever player, Stan Bowles was pure rock 'n' roll. He was famous for reading fans' match programmes on the pitch mid-game, asking supporters for horse racing updates, and deliberately knocking the FA Cup off its pitchside display table with a ball during a match against Sunderland.
🎸 GAIZKA MENDIETA
The Spanish midfielder loved rock music so much that dressing room rap music drove him crazy. The former Valencia, Lazio, and Middlesbrough star famously joined Spanish indie band Los Planetas on stage to play guitar live at the Benicàssim Festival.
💨 DANI OSVALDO
After a chaotic career featuring touchline brawls, training ground headbutts, and dressing room smoking incidents, Osvaldo retired at 30 to front rock band Barrio Viejo. He even turned down an offer to join Sevilla because the contract clashed with the Cosquín Rock festival.
💿 ALEXI LALAS
The ginger-bearded star of the USA's 1994 World Cup team is a massive fan of glam metal band Ratt. A musician alongside his playing career, Lalas opened for Hootie & The Blowfish on their 1998 European tour with his band The Gypsies and has released eight solo studio albums.
🐶 GARETH AINSWORTH
The long-haired former Wycombe manager rocked open-necked shirts and red cowboy boots on the touchline, citing Jim Morrison and Michael Hutchence as his managerial inspirations. While managing in the EFL, he continued to front bands Dog Chewed The Handle and Cold Blooded Hearts.
🦖 FAUSTINO ASPRILLA
Equal parts genius and madman, Newcastle's iconic Colombian once missed a European final after injuring his foot kicking through a bus door. In recent years, Tino has been arrested for allegedly firing a machine gun near his farm and filmed teaching his horse how to play football while wearing a T-Rex suit.
