Egypt’s Blasphemy Double Standard An Egyptian TV host, Dina Al-Masry, became angry when the call to prayer in her neighborhood was lowered because of decibel regulations and complaints from residents, including families with sick people who needed rest. With no evidence, she immediately blamed Christians. Then she went on social media insulting them, using degrading language, and mocking church bells as sounding like kitchen pots banging against each other. She was suspended from her show. But many are now calling for her prosecution. Egypt’s blasphemy law is supposedly there to protect both Islam and Christianity. So people are demanding that it be applied equally. If an Egyptian Christian TV host had publicly insulted Muslims, mocked the adhan, and used degrading stereotypes about Muslims, does anyone seriously believe suspension would have been the end of it? He would have been behind bars facing a heavy sentence, while his family could have faced retaliation from ordinary Muslims. This is the double standard: Egypt’s blasphemy laws claim to protect both religions, but in practice, they are used to protect Islam and prosecute Christians.
