Children of Llullaillaco :
They are three Inca child mummies discovered on 1999 near the summit of Llullaillaco, 6739m stratovolcano, in Andes mountains on border between Chile and Argentina. Children were sacrificed in an Inca religious ritual, 1500 AD.
In this ritual, three children were drugged, then placed inside a small chamber 1.5m beneath ground, where they were left to die. DNA testing indicated that two girls were half sisters, while boy was not related.
Mummies were in exceptional condition when found. Internal organs were still intact, and one of hearts still contained frozen blood. Extreme dryness of air is a major reason for excellent preservation of mummies for 500 years.
