Birthdays are deeply on theme for this event:
Dionysus was BORN TWICE! (had his birthday cake + ate it!)
His mother Semele (who you’ll also meet at the event) gave birth to him 1st;
then his father Zeus saved him as she lay dying & stitched him into his thigh, from which he was born again,

In alternative Orphic mythology, Dionysus (here known as Zagreus) was the son of Zeus & Perspehone, who was torn apart by the Titans;
Zeus saved his heart and gave it to Semele, from whence he was born again.

What were the Eleusinian Mysteries?

For nine days, ancient Athens stepped out of ordinary life.
Thousands joined the Eleusinian Mysteries: procession, purification, ritual.
What went on tour stayed on tour – initiates were forbidden to reveal their experiences.

But they became the benchmark for Transformation Events’
the holy grail of mysteries.

Tonight begins Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
Wine is blessed; apples meet honey; sweet food carries sweet wishes for the year ahead.

Wine runs deep through Jewish tradition, as it did through Ancient Greece.

Later this month comes Sukkot, the harvest festival whose leafy shelters, fruit & musical processions reminded ancient Greek observers of celebrations of Dionysus.

And there were dances in the vineyards! The Mishnah describes young women in borrowed white garments dancing among the vines on Tu B’Av & Yom Kippur, as prospective partners looked on.

The erotic Song of Songs opens with a woman declaring:
“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, for your loving is better than wine.”
Later, her lover compares her breasts to bunches of grapes, her breath to the fragrance of apples - & her mouth to the finest wine.

Fruit, desire & the divine entwined.

Rosh Hashanah’s prayers reference Noah who, in Genesis, not only builds the Ark, but plants a vineyard after the waters recede - his grapes ultimately another form of refuge.

As we prepare our own Dionysian feast, we welcome all remembrances and manifestations of these poignant Mediterranean echoes.
