Is classical education inherently conservative?

It honestly depends on what we mean by conservative.

Classical education is absolutely about recovering the ancient telos of education which was always the cultivation of virtue, moral formation, disciplined thinking, and the pursuit of truth and beauty. It is also unapologetically about passing along the Western intellectual tradition (Athens, Jerusalem, and Rome) much of it mediated through Christianity and Catholic thought.

But that does not mean it is merely partisan or reactionary. Folks on the right should love it, but folks on the left will eventually come to terms with the fact they have nowhere else to go.

The Left still has some serious IQ horsepower. And over time, it is simply not sustainable for thoughtful people to stand against the deepest traditions of human reason, moral philosophy, and civilizational inheritance. You can only sneer at Plato, Augustine, Aquinas, Dante, and Shakespeare for so long before the sneering itself starts to look unserious.

Mark this post! In five or ten years, classical education will be bipartisan. Not because it “won” a culture war, but because serious minds eventually rediscover that education is about formation, not indoctrination, and the best thinking we have didn’t begin in 2020.

Rejecting Athens, Jerusalem, and Rome isn’t progressive. It’s just anti-intellectual.

In The Abolition of Man, Lewis argues that when a society stops believing in objective virtue, it doesn’t become tolerant… it becomes manipulable.

He calls the result “men without chests.”

People with appetites and intellects, but no courage, no honor, no trained moral instincts. They can calculate everything and defend nothing.

Lewis saw that once we reject inherited moral law, we don’t become free. We become raw material… easily shaped by propaganda, pleasure, and fear.

Modern man prides himself on compassion while quietly surrendering every standard that once gave compassion meaning.

Lewis’s insight is brutal: a civilization that educates clever cowards will eventually be ruled by tyrants or technicians.

Because when nothing is worth dying for, everything becomes negotiable… including human dignity.

As R.R. Reno suggests in his book, "Return of the Strong Gods," over the past three quarters of a century, intellectuals, politicians, and others have sought to introduce "therapies of disenchantment" into Western society, particularly into the education of children.

With this greater insistence on relativism and skepticism, as well as materialism and rationalism, those things that promote deep meaning, purpose, and strong attachments--like national identity, religious belief, and moral certainty--have been increasingly forced out of public education so that children are encouraged and taught to become detached materialists and moral relativists rather than those who treasure tradition, objective morality, and the beauty and joy of close-knit community.

At All Saints Classical Lutheran School, we strive to push back against these "therapies of disenchantment," helping our young scholars to treasure things like faith in Christ, patriotism, and the God-given gifts of marriage, family, and community.
