Biotissue is defined in this recent systematic review and meta-analysis as “a bioengineered construct designed to mimic the structure and function of natural tissues, built from synthetic or processed materials without living cells, and intended to reproduce selected mechanical and chemical properties.”

The research team concluded that, for abdominal surgery, biotissue is a valid tool for psychomotor skills training, offering fewer ethical concerns and greater anatomical accuracy than animal use. They also suggested that biotissue-based models are likely to represent the future of surgical training.

Greater support and adoption of these models—particularly the development of reusable options—can help lower their cost.
