Letter I wrote to the Courier.
Sir,
I believe it is incredibly shortsighted for residents of the West End to oppose Dundee’s new training facilities. These developments promise far-reaching benefits that extend well beyond the immediate concerns often cited.
First, the facilities are not solely for Dundee FC; they will also serve local children’s teams, providing essential spaces for young athletes across the community to train and compete.
Second, exercise and sport are vital for children’s holistic development. They strengthen bodies, sharpen brains, foster bonding, and create lasting friendships. Moreover, participation in sports offers significant mental health benefits, helping to build resilience and reduce stress in an increasingly challenging world.
Third, these facilities will promote women’s football, accelerating its growth and dismantling gender barriers that have long hindered female participation. By offering dedicated resources, we can empower more girls and women to engage in the sport, promoting equality and inclusivity.
Fourth, for lonely and vulnerable children, joining a team game can be transformative. Playing alongside peers encourages social interaction, builds confidence, and provides a supportive environment that combats isolation.
Finally, enhancing training facilities could elevate Dundee’s profile by nurturing top-tier talent. Improved resources might boost Dundee FC’s on-field success, attracting players to both city clubs—Dundee FC and Dundee United. This influx could lead to greater achievements, stimulating the local economy through increased tourism, sponsorships, and community pride.
In opposing this project, residents risk denying Dundee a brighter, healthier future. Let us embrace progress for the greater good.
James Hosie.
